Herby PoP aims to establish a popcorn manufacturing facility, ideally with a small storefront, in the Chicagoland area. Given Herby PoP’s mission and values emphasizing wellness, community and social responsibility, Herby PoP has a strong preference for establishing their facilities in the Roseland Community Area of Chicago, but will give priority to a location that is optimal for the financial health and potential of the business.

  • September 20, 2021 - Deep Dive in Herby PoP

    • Learn about the Herby PoP brand, the company’s history, mission and values and how these are “lived” by the company
    • What is the company’s target demographic, product, and business model? Highlight your understanding of products and customer segments relevant to the current project objectives.
    • What are the company’s short and long term goals? How do these inform their objectives around manufacturing (production and distribution)?*

    Note: All Herby PoP projects begin with a “deep dive” into the company that includes 3 shared objectives and 1 objective unique to the focus of the project topic (*).

  • October 4, 2021 - Determine Requirements Popcorn Manufacturing/Production

    • How would you describe, in detail, the popcorn production process that Herby PoP uses/plans to use with their production facility?
    • What requirements/conditions must be met to produce their high-quality food products?
    • What resources are needed to complete the full set of step/motions and launch production (e.g. equipment, installation, materials (e.g. packaging) and operation (labor)?
    • What are the spatial, utility, and other structural features needed to accommodate the production footprint?
    • What are the estimated costs associated with the operation?

    Suggested Deliverable:

    Report/diagram outlining production process and associated requirements, resources, and estimated costs

  • October 18, 2021 - Investigate the factors that should be considered when selecting a manufacturing location

    • What “hard” factors have a direct impact on financial outcomes and should be considered when selecting a manufacturing location? What are the opportunities and costs associated with these factors? Some factors to consider include:
      • Supply chain infrastructure and logistics
      • Access to customer markets
      • Zoning and other laws and regulations
      • Tax rates, opportunity zones, other incentives
      • Operating costs (facility/real estate, utilities, competitive wages & benefits)
    • What soft factors should be considered, and what is their potential indirect impact on the business and its financial outcomes?
      • Mission and values driven goals (e.g. creating employment opportunities; bringing businesses to dis-invested community area in Chicago)
      • Other?

  • November 15, 2021 - Make Recommendations for Herby PoP's Manufacturing Facility

    • Drawing upon the outcomes from the previous milestones, what do you conclude about Herby PoP’s priorities and needs for a manufacturing facility?

    • What are examples of commercial real estate listings that meet/can reasonably meet Herby PoP’s needs and priorities?
